A YouTube Shorts link contains the same 11-character video ID used by standard YouTube watch links. That means you can extract a Shorts thumbnail without converting the URL or opening the YouTube API.
Extract a Shorts thumbnail
- Copy the full Shorts URL, such as youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID.
- Open the homepage extractor and paste the URL.
- Select Extract Thumbnails.
- Preview the available files and download the size that fits your project.
The extractor also accepts the equivalent watch, youtu.be, Embed, and Live formats. If someone sends you a different link format for the same Short, you do not need to rewrite it first.
Why the thumbnail may look different
Shorts are vertical videos, but YouTube can store thumbnail files in several aspect ratios and sizes. A creator may also choose a frame inside the YouTube mobile app rather than upload a separate image. The downloaded file therefore may not match the frame shown in every Shorts feed or device layout.
Check image availability
YouTube may provide thumbnail files up to 1280×720, followed by 640×480, 480×360, 320×180, and 120×90. Older or lower-resolution Shorts may not have the largest file. If a preview is missing or shows a lower-quality fallback, choose another available size instead of enlarging a small image.
Use the image in your workflow
A Shorts thumbnail can help with internal content planning, archives, presentations, or analysis. If you plan to publish it, confirm that you own the Short or have permission from the rights holder. The extractor downloads the file; it does not grant reuse rights.
